In order to achieve a cinematic camera push-in I camera projected the style frame onto a 3d mockup of the scene. This technique gave the painterly backdrop volumetric parallax. The characters and holographic elements were composited on cards placed in the 3d environment.
This early playblast shows the transition between After effects 2.5D and a 3d camera move in C4D. For the final shot, the beam network was animated from splines generated by a spherical mesh. Every shot was later composited with cell character and VFX elements in After Effects.
